Aggregate driveway surfacing

Residential paving upgrade in Darling Point

This project was completed in July 2014 in picturesque Darling Point, just a short stroll away from the Double Bay Ferry. The driveway pictured is located in a block of eleven apartments, which was constructed in the early 1970s. It is the common vehicular access point for the apartment block, receiving regular traffic throughout the day. The original surface consisted of exposed concrete with an 8mm river pebble installed over a structural slab. Whilst still functional, this surface was in urgent need of repair or replacement. Removing and disposing of such concrete surfaces can be costly, disruptive and, in some cases, cause further structural damage to the surface and surrounds.Aggregate driveway

As qualified experts in concrete overlays and refurbishment, and with the approval of the owner’s engineer and architect, Glooloop Surfacing undertook a repair and complete overlay resurfacing of the existing driveway using a blend of 3mm and 6mm light grey stone, with the border detail in a darker charcoal stone. The design and layout reflects the building columns that run the full height of the block. The surfacing provides a cost effective, practical, stylish and modern gravel driveway aesthetic, without the problem of loose stones to maintain (which is practically impossible on a sloping driveway such as this one).

This project is a good example of how a resin bound aggregate overlay can work to enhance the features of an older style building, bringing the building’s outdoor common areas up to date, whilst still blending in with the original style of the building.

The work was undertaken in conjunction with Stephen Grech, of Stephen Grech & Associates Architects (www.grecharchitects.com.au) and took a total of 10 days to complete. The driveway comes with a 7 year warranty, and has been installed to withstand the constant vehicular traffic that common-area driveways in apartment blocks experience.
